Breaking through in the Hebrides
Volunteering Hebrides is vibrant and energetic charity with a firm focus on establishing volunteer led activities which support and empower people across the Isle of Lewis.
They specialise in reaching out to vulnerable people in hard to reach groups in order to increase their quality of life and the quality of life of others in our community. Volunteering Hebrides have a well-respected reputation for delivering grassroots projects for maximum social benefit.
"Breakthrough for the Housebound" is a volunteer inspired idea which was funded with a grant through Postcode Community Trust. The project aimed to reduce loneliness and social isolation by matching creative volunteer befrienders with housebound people. The pairs then worked together to tap into their creative skills and talents in order to produce high quality pieces of artwork which were displayed at a very special and innovative gallery exhibition. A creative co-ordinator managed the project and offered skilled training and support to all participants.
The images in this article show an element of the gallery exhibition where the question was asked, "What does community mean to me?". This aimed to raise awareness of the importance of being connected within the community.
