Goldies changing lives for people in Wales!
Thanks to players of People’s Postcode Lottery, Goldies Cymru received £10,000 in 2016 to introduce a ten month project which incorporates singing and activity sessions for those who are visually impaired. Goldies Cymru is a social initiative, bringing positive change to marginalised vulnerable people in Wales.
Using social singing and activity sessions, they encourage participation and functional exercise. Based on memory-evoking songs of the 1950’s, they encourage activities that improve mental and physical health. Goldies Cymru is open to all, with most participants being older people living in social isolation, and adults with learning disabilities and their carers’.
One partially sighted woman who regularly attends Goldies sessions said:
“I am partially sighted and cannot read the words in the song books, but I still enjoy sing along to all the songs. My husband suffers from Parkinson’s disease so is unfortunately not well enough to attend, however he has noticed how much of a difference the sessions have made to my life."
Grenville Jones, founder of Goldies was delighted with the award:
“The funding from players of People’s Postcode Lottery enabled us to reach those who were visually impaired in Wales and it has had a hugely positive response. Singing really should be available on prescription!”
